There is nothing worse than feeling that sudden dread of illness in your stomach, also known as nausea. It is a feeling that can arise for a number of different reasons including pregnancy or travel.

While there are a few medications available to help with the relief of nausea, there are also a number of different natural remedies that can help. The benefit of searching for a natural remedy is that you can avoid any unwanted side effects that usually come from various medications, such as drowsiness.

  1. Control Your Breathing
There have been studies surrounding the use of slow, controlled breathing to help in the relief of nausea. In most studies, the participants would breathe in through their nose to a count of three, hold to the count of three and then release the breath to the same count. In most cases, this has helped. In one such study, controlled breathing reduced nausea in 62% of cases. Not only is this a rather effective way to reduce nausea, but it’s also completely free.

  2. Progressive Muscle Relaxation
Chemotherapy, unfortunately, creates a lot of nausea for many patients. One study looked at ways to relieve this nausea. It was determined that progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) is an effective way to reduce nausea from chemotherapy. Not only can this provide physical relaxation, but it also offers you a mental break as well. Due to the results of this study, you may find relief for your nausea with PMR or a massage.

  3. Cut A Lemon
Many pregnant women who are experiencing nausea have found relief from slicing a lemon. One study showed that cutting, or even scratching the surface of lemon to release the essential oils in the air can help reduce nausea. Even the use of lemon essential oil can help when you’re not home. Citrus smells can be of great help when you’re feeling unwell.

  4. Eat Some Ginger
The use of ginger is one of the most popular options to relieve nausea. The use of ginger for nausea is useful for all types of causes such as pregnancy, travel and chemotherapy. There are still studies being conducted to address the side effects of ginger during pregnancy but so far, there is a low risk of side effects. Most experts offer ginger as a good method for pregnancy nausea.

  5. Add Vitamin B6
Many experts believe the supplement Vitamin B6, or pyridoxine, is an effective treatment for nausea. Some believe it is a good option for pregnant women to take this on a daily basis as a first-line treatment. It is also considered safe in doses up to 200mg during pregnancy, making it an ideal solution to nausea.

  6. Assess Your Diet
If you’re constantly plagued with feelings of nausea, especially if it is for no apparent reason, assessing your intake and your diet may be a good start. Fatty and spicy foods can cause nausea with a lot of people. Instead, choose bland foods such as applesauce, crackers, bananas, baked potatoes and rice. Ensure all of your meals have good levels of protein and avoid large meals. Instead, opt for smaller, more regular meals.

  7. Stay Hydrated
If you’re dehydrated, your nausea may feel worse. Ensure you get plenty of water intake into each day and if you need it, using an electrolyte drink is also ideal. These types of drinks and solutions can ensure you replace any electrolytes through your dehydration.
If you are also vomiting with your nausea feelings, it is even more important to replenish your lost fluids.

Nausea can be quite disruptive to your day. Depending on the reasons, you may need to gain more advice from your medical practitioner. This is especially true if you also experience vomiting, diarrhea or a fever. Your doctor can assess your health properly and provide you with the best advice.
