People use electrolyte supplements for a range of reasons; a boost to a morning routine, to help them get through a hard workout or simply to replenish electrolytes after a workout or loss of fluids. In Australia, losing fluid through sweat in the warmer months is also cause for good use of an electrolyte drink. But, with so many different options on the market, what one should you be choosing?

One option that many people reach for is the “sports drink”. While they may be convenient and found in many stores, the problem with a lot of these types of drinks is that they’re full of sugar and artificial ingredients. You may get a boost of energy, but you may also be consuming too many calories, especially if you’re trying to lose weight.

So, what should you look for in an electrolyte supplement or powder?

Watch for sugar content

As mentioned above, there are a number of electrolyte supplements and drinks that are on the market that also pack a good level of sugar within the ingredients. While it might make the drink taste nice, it isn’t going to do your body any favours. Look for an electrolyte powder that has natural sweeteners and is low in sugar.

Sugar will only increase the number of calories within the drink and this can be problematic for those who are also looking to lose weight. The last thing you want to be doing is working out and doing your best at the gym only to undo your efforts afterwards by consuming a high amount of sugar with your electrolyte drink.

Look for vegan and vegetarian-friendly options

If you are following a vegan or vegetarian diet, there may be some electrolyte supplements that aren’t suitable for your needs. Luckily, there are also a good number of supplements on the market that are vegan and vegetarian free. It’s just a matter of looking at the ingredients to ensure it is suitable for your diet and your needs.

Great taste

There’s nothing worse than having a nice cool drink of electrolytes after a workout only to find that you can’t stand the taste! Fortunately, there are some great tasting drinks on the market. There are also a number of different flavours to choose from, making it even easier to find a drink that you will enjoy.

Check for the right ingredients

There are actually a lot of different electrolytes and these consist of salts, acids and bases. But, when it comes to an electrolyte supplement, there are a number of ingredients that should be included in your supplement of choice:

  • Calcium
  • Potassium
  • Sodium
  • Chloride
  • Magnesium

Each of these key ingredients will provide different benefits such as proper organ functionality, regulating body fluid volumes, cell balance and much more. Most electrolyte drinks will offer more than these key ingredients, but these elements form the core to a good electrolyte drink/supplement.

Check for other dietary requirements

Many of us have different dietary requirements. Some may be lactose or dairy intolerant while others need to avoid gluten. Depending on your personal needs, you may need to find an electrolyte supplement that works well for you and your diet. There are a number of options available and some may be gluten-free but still have lactose. Others are free from all of these elements. At the end of the day, however, it’s always important to choose an electrolyte supplement that works well for you.

There are electrolyte drinks that are pre-made, but unfortunately, many of these contain preservatives. But, there are also electrolyte powders on the market that may provide you with a convenient method of gaining electrolytes without the added preservatives. Many people choose to add a powder to their post-workout shake. Depending on your needs and why you’re looking for an electrolyte boost, you may find that one product is better suited to you over another. If you’re unsure of the best electrolyte for you, speak to your doctor about your needs and they may be able to advise on a suitable product for you.
